THE COSMIC MOTHER
Motherhood quite literally shook me to my core ( helloooo energetic upgrade), in the most beautiful - life will never be the same kind of way…prompting a two year long deep dive into the Cosmic Mother Archetype and what it means to be a mother in all the ways.
What I found is that the concept of mother is fundamental to our humanity. And it’s bigger and more profound than we realize. There’s a long history that takes us from the ground beneath our feet across time and space to the Cosmic Mother.
So, hey, hi, hello! Grab your snacks. Get your beverages. Let’s get into it for a minute.
THE DIVINE MOTHER
Let’s start at the beginning when God was a woman. Before the patriarchy flipped the script, we worshipped our Goddesses and understood the power of the divine feminine; the divine mother. Before we condemned the wise women, the healers, the curanderas, as witches and shunned them, we celebrated their wisdom. We looked to them to birth our children, to read the stars, to read our bodies, to make us medicine, to help us talk to God when we lost our own connection. We knew feminine energy to be a thread woven from our bodies throughout the earth and the cosmos. We saw the pattern and our divine place in it. We thrived when we acknowledged this part of our heritage.There was a greater balance between the masculine and feminine energies (friendly reminder: not related to gender!) that went beyond individual persons to an entire worldview. We can still see remnants of that worldview today. For example, we ascribe femininity to the moon. We call the earth: mother earth
MOTHER EARTH
Is it “mother” because feminine energy is dope and so obviously it should be used to describe our magnificent and glorious planet? I mean, kind of, yes. BUT ALSO to break it down a little bit:
We ascribe the mother (feminine) aspect to all of nature because there we find beauty, tenderness, nurturing, and it’s where we seek grounding. Also, nature is creation, and women are the foremost creators. Earth is also our home and we attribute the nurturing of home to mothers. It’s all of those things and more! The term mother earth honors a perspective that respects the divine feminine. It acknowledges that the original religion of humanity was the religion of the Goddess;
it sees nature as sacred and recognizes the great Goddess as mother nature. This reverence is how we learned that the cycle of women’s bodies is connected to the phases of the moon. And, like the earth, women’s bodies go through seasons of fertility.
THE MOTHERSHIP
So it makes sense that to understand the full scope of the sacred concept of mother we begin with protecting the earth. We remember that mother earth energy permeates throughout all of nature and that we are part of her creation. There is no separation. We unlearn the teachings of the patriarchy and return to the reverence & balance that is the Matriarchy. From that place, we will know mothering as a way of being in the world; a love language of the divine feminine that transcends societal constructs. It will be a return to wholeness, a nod to our collective past and heritage, while looking out of the window of the mothership towards the future.
